DESCRIPTION: Military, police, firefighters, doctors, nurses, first-line responders all have to shut down their emotions to be successful at their jobs. However, these skills often contribute to an emotional disconnection at home with their significant other. Emotionally Focused Therapy is a powerful tool to help couples when a partner in the couple experiences high demand on-the-job to help with high tension under regulation or emotional numbing and over regulation of emotion. Our attempts as therapists in understanding and being with either/both coping strategies can backfire resulting in a fragile alliance and difficulty getting a depth of experiencing necessary to obtain the strong outcomes associated with EFT. Learn skills to rely on as you face couples who are are under massive stress that is impacting their relationships, so you can help those couples utilized their relationship as a safe haven and secure base.
Through demonstration, videotape, and practice, therapists will learn how to openly engage withdrawers from a place of curiosity instead of it feeling like an inquisition. Integrating concepts from George’s book Sacred Stress, participants will learn how to lean into the withdrawer’s blocks to engagement and discover that blocks can be transformed into bridges.
