A Research-Based Roadmap for Rebuilding Trust, Safety, and Connection
When an affair is discovered, couples often enter therapy in crisis. The betrayed partner may experience intrusive thoughts, hypervigilance, grief, anger, and recurring emotional triggers. The partner who engaged in the affair may respond with shame, defensiveness, minimization, or an urgent desire to move forward.
For the therapist, the challenge is knowing where to begin—and how to help both partners participate in treatment without minimizing the injury or losing sight of accountability.
After the Affair provides a research-informed framework for assessing betrayal, stabilizing distressed couples, and guiding the work of repair. This full-day training explores the difference between ending an affair and rebuilding a relationship, with attention to treatment sequencing, emotional regulation, accountability, transparency, and renewed connection.
A Clearer Direction for Complex Clinical Work
Therapists will explore how to validate the betrayed partner’s distress while helping the partner who engaged in the affair develop greater responsibility, empathy, and responsiveness. The training addresses difficult questions, recurring triggers, emotional flooding, and the tension between one partner’s need for answers and the other’s wish to stop discussing the betrayal.
Participants will examine how to explore relationship dynamics without treating those dynamics as justification for the affair. Attention will also be given to assessing safety, ongoing deception, and each partner’s willingness to participate in repair.
The clinical goal is to help couples make informed decisions about their relationship and, when both partners choose reconciliation, establish a more trustworthy and connected way of relating. Forgiveness and reconciliation should not be presumed or rushed.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the training, participants will be able to:
- Identify common emotional and behavioral responses following the discovery of infidelity.
- Differentiate trauma-like reactions from a formal trauma diagnosis and recognize when further assessment is needed.
- Describe a phased approach to stabilization, betrayal repair, and relational reconnection.
- Distinguish responsibility for the affair from broader relationship patterns that may need attention.
- Identify therapeutic responses to defensiveness, minimization, shame, and emotional flooding.
- Facilitate conversations about disclosure, questions, triggers, boundaries, and mutually agreed transparency.
- Describe observable behaviors that support accountability, empathy, and the rebuilding of trust.
- Identify considerations for renewed friendship and intimacy while respecting each partner’s readiness and autonomy.
Who Should Attend?
This training is designed for marriage and family therapists, mental health counselors, clinical social workers, psychologists, and other clinicians who work with couples or individuals affected by infidelity.
It is relevant to clinicians treating physical or emotional affairs, ongoing secrecy, and unresolved relational betrayal, including situations in which partners remain uncertain about reconciliation.
